After Effects Tutorial

I'm going to use this video so that I can get the fundamentals of After Effects under my belt. This video will give me some ideas as what to do with title cards, logo etc. This is the video I am going to use to make the SNN Films logo.

Downton Abbey Representation Practice

Image
The excerpt is from 1:36 to the end. Questions: Who (out of the 7 core representation areas of society) are being represented in this clip? Class and Status. How are they represented? The contrast is between the servants and the masters of the house. The servants are represented as if they have been doing the same thing everyday for a long time. Their system is portrayed very strictly, for example frustration when people are late. The audience is not made to feel bad for the servants as such as they are not serving cruel people. It is simply the job of their class. The family of the house is shown as being very proper and and part of high class English society and their reactions to the news of the Titanic sinking strengthen this image. They are not portrayed as cruel to their servants and are very polite to them thus not encouraging the audience to be against them and they feel bad for them when they hear the news that their friends did not make it. 4 Technical Elements Plannin...

Opening Sequences

Image
What is the purpose of opening sequences? The main purpose of opening sequences is to show the audience the opening credits or give some subtle but important information about the events yet to happen in the film. These credits tend to include the main roles of the creation of the film, typically the main cast members and directors.  What is the difference between an opening sequence and a title sequence? A title sequence is an opening sequence that is separate from the action of the film. An example of this is in Skyfall (2012). In this sequence the opening credits are shown with a song in the background that is specifically written for the film and the content on screen is abstract and not directly part of the story. What techniques can be employed in an opening sequence? This is a link to the website where i got the following examples. https://www.creativebloq.com/audiovisual/top-techniques-title-sequences-10135013 Casino Royale (2006) Techniques: 2D styled graphics in a 3D envi...

Research: The Bourne Identity Essay

The Bourne Identity: Action Thriller The scene begins with the protagonist Jason Bourne arriving at the dock after being rescued at sea. The first thing to note is that this moment when he steps onto land is the first time in his memory of being on dry land. The scene opens with an establishing shot of the port looking out towards the sea. Boats can be seen in the background and it gives context to Bourne’s new environment. Everyone we are seeing, from Bourne’s perspective is completely foreign and new to him and it is this that builds however mild a suspense. The next shot that is used is a wide shot which includes Bourne in the frame. Him walking slowly towards the camera while everyone around him is going about their business shows his apparent helplessness as to the situation he is in. To put it simply, he is lost. The camera pans towards the street to watch him walk away and he disappears behind a small vehicle that travels in the camera’s eyesight, blocking Bourne from ...

"SMILE" *ROUGH EDIT* Preliminary Task 1

Image
FEEDBACK: Teacher Bianca: Some pointers to consider;   Do you want to challenge the convention of an establishing shot to set the scene for the audience or are you deliberately challenging that convention? A few handheld shots of the place at night or even as CCTV footage (creepy, abandoned hallways) could set the scene well? Your opening credits don’t need all roles, only main ones like main actors / directors Your yellow balloon clown-face is effective (very creepy). Did you want to introduce the symbolic prop earlier on to foreshadow what’s going to happen? Perhaps part of the opening shots interwoven with establishing shots are shots of the balloons being blown up but we don’t know why? Your sound is great! It needs tweaking when the killer is speaking so we hear his voice clearly. Your soundtrack (called a score when no song being sung) is effective but needs to be more dynamic when the victim leaves the office. Think about points of rising tension and work out how to ...

What are the key ingredients in creating a suspense-filled clip?

Image
The first video is private so I couldn't see it. In Jaws Spielberg uses the question of "Will he catch the shark or will it get away?" He jumps between objective and subjective perspectives. He watches the hand movements of characters. In Jaws he watches Quinn's hands and feet in his process of preperation. In The Colour Purple Celia's hands are shown shaking as she shaves her husband after she's told that if she cuts him he will kill her. In Munich the main source of tension is the knowledge that Abner is going to try to kill someone. Him meeting his hotel neighbours one of which is the man he is there to kill who turns out to be a friendly person which makes the scene even more uncomfortable. Spielberg frames the important objects wisely large and in the foreground. The fishing rod in Jaws, and the razor in The Colour Purple. Difference between suspense and shock. The audience needs information for the scene to contain any suspense. Bomb theory Shock is the...
